brief
The school was facing increasing capacity demands and required new teaching accommodation. The new accommodation needed to be calmer and independent of the usual hustle and bustle of the main building to ensure a positive pupil experience.
We were tasked with delivering the additional SEND teaching accommodation with a focus upon minimising operational costs and ensuring minimal disruption throughout construction during term time.
challenges + solutions
The new teaching space could not be viably accommodated within the main building due to its form and internal layout.
The solution was a high quality single-storey classroom building adjacent to the main school entrance. The new classroom is fully accessible, and includes a glazing arrangement that provides plentiful daylighting and permits flexible internal configurations, using a combination of high-level and full height slot windows.
The building minimises operational costs by being thermally very efficient (using timber panelised construction), and including an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels on the roof.
